Get Involved

Below are some ways in which YOU can support conservation of Bombus affinis and other native bees!

1. Spread awareness

This can simply mean reposting a video or photo on Instagram to share with a wider audience, or it could mean holding an outreach program to teach community members about the endangerment of B. affinis and other native bees and how they can help.

2. Plant native

One of the easiest ways for individuals to make a difference is simply by planting native flowers in your backyard! Many bees, including the rusty patched bumble bee, have evolved specifically to pollinate plants native to this region. Lack of native plants and increased planting of non-native varieties may affect pollinating behaviors due to differences in seasonality of pollen availability and pollen nutrition. In addition, try to avoid using insecticides and pesticides in your garden!

3. Volunteer for conservation organizations

Many communities have organizations that support conservation of bees through a variety of ways including habitat rehabilitation, breeding programs, research programs. For volunteering opportunities near you, try searching your local government website for conservation projects. If you are unable to find any, consider reaching out to government officials to encourage them to implement conservation programs in your area! You can also check out Additional Resources below for additional volunteer opportunities.

4. VOTE!

While not everyone has the means to directly contribute to bee conservation, voting is an easy and accessible way to make a huge difference. Vote for politicians and legislators who support conservation efforts! By doing so, more funding and labor may be allotted towards conservation of native bee species.
